The Food Pyramid

Wellness classes today talked about the importance of the My Pyramid in their lives. Many of the students had a good idea about what a good diet should include, but admitted that most days, they do not follow the guidelines. We created our own Pyramids today with examples of food that we would eat. Mrs. Haddox challenged us to try to eat according to those guidelines.

We visited the computer lab today and continued our Travel Journals that are due on April 19Th. We also continued with accumulating our First in Math points!

Food isn't the only health related topic that was discussed today. Sergeant Cross taught us about the prevalence of heroin in our area. Since it is such a problem, he added it to the curriculum for D.A.R.E. This dangerous drug causes addiction with the very first dose. It is definitely something we all want to stay away from.

Homework:
Math: Start to review math concepts for a test on Section A on Tuesday or Wednesday
Science: Vocabulary notecards; Test Tuesday
Wellness: My Pyramid colored and labeled with rubric. Due Monday.
Language Arts: Read p. 1-49 in Pictures of Hollis Woods and complete your role.
Social Studies: Travel Journal #3 is due on the 19th.

Just in Time for OUR PIRATES' Opening Day!

We hope you enjoy our Language Arts classes' performances of 'Who's On First?'! We had so much fun working together on this project!

We're wishing the Pirates success in playing their HOME OPENER! So far, they're off to a great start, and we'll be pulling for them all the way!

Our Language Arts groups received our new novel, Pictures of Hollis Woods, and were grouped for McD's Cafe. Mrs. Mac and Mrs. Haddox were our guest readers today. We learned that our new novel is organized in an interesting way. There are chapters and "pictures" or flashbacks alternately. Hollis Woods is the storyteller. Even though we've only read a little of the story, it seems very interesting.

Math classes discussed rate and unit rate and how this comparison can help when you are shopping. Mrs. Haddox was very impressed with how quickly we made our comparisons. Tomorrow we will be creating vocabulary cards to help us review for our science test.

Homework:
Math: Page 308, 6-16
Science: start reviewing vocabulary.
Language Arts: Study your homophones, vocabulary, and review the story 'The Night of the Pomegranate.' Read Pictures of Hollis Woods through p. 49 for next Thursday. Complete your role.
Social Studies: Travel journal #3 is due April 19th.

The Theme of our Day is.....

Our theme for the day? Learning never exhausts the mind? Our learning is never ending? Time flies when you're having fun! Today, we applied the skill of identifying theme to a group of entertaining fables. Mrs. Mac had many theme ideas on the board. She read a fable to us, and we searched for the matching theme. We had to provide text examples to support our choice of theme. Some of us were very good at it! We then worked with partners on our chosen fables and mapped out the themes and support. Mrs. Mac was impressed with our work.

We also read our week's story, The Night of the Pomegranate. Many of us could relate to the main character Harriet. During the afternoon, we thought about the theme or lesson in the story at a learning center activity.

You can see above, we had a science lab today. We discovered the differences between suspensions and solutions. Using a funnel, filter paper, sand, and salt, we were able to filter the suspension. If we let the filtration evaporate from the salt mixture, we would find salt left behind. We then completed a lab reflecting our findings.

Homework:
Language Arts - Continue to study your homophones! Our spelling test will be on Friday. Review the story and your new vocabulary words as well!
Social Studies - Your travel journal assignment is due on 4/19.
McD's Cafe - Tomorrow we will receive our new novel!
Science: Graded science lab
Math- R 6-3 and P 6-3

One Shining Moment!

For those of us who were caught up in March Madness, and many were, it has come to an end. The games this year were very exciting, and everyone had their favorites. It was UConn's shining moment last night, but all the teams gave us so much to cheer about.

Today, we watched a brief film clip about our solar system to build some background information for this week's story The Night of the Pomegranate. In our story, the character Harriet watches the sky to study Mars in order to complete a project at school. She learns much more from her observations than what she could learn by creating a model. New vocabulary were reviewed and include constellation, marveled, orbit, relative, solar, and universe. Since we're all familiar with what a pomegranate is, we're wondering what that has to do with the story.

Our Spelling list this week is a tough one, but very important. We are studying homophones. Our homework, given yesterday, is due tomorrow. Each word needs to be used in a sentence.

We visited our library today for a lesson and book exchange. The new nine week period has begun, and we need to work on our AR goals to be included in the reward days.

Our new McD's Cafe book is Pictures of Hollis Woods. The book is available as an e-book, for those who have Nooks, Kindles, or iPads and are interested. We will begin on Thursday in McD's.

Today is Report Card day! The report cards are ours to keep. We only need to return the signed envelopes. Report card envelopes contain the report card, fluency letter, sealed health report card, and in some cases an achievement certificate.

Unit prices and ratios were the topic in Math today, while in Science, we reviewed the physical properties of matter.

Our Who's On First clips were completed today. Please look for them on the blog soon! The Pirates'Opening Day is coming!

Homework:
Language Arts - Trace +2 and spelling sentences are due tomorrow.
Social Studies - Travel Journal #3 is due April 19th.
McD's Cafe - New novel will be distributed on Thursday. Those who are interested in downloading may do so.
Math - 6-3 (R&P sides)

Ratios and AR Reward!

Math students continued learning about ratios today. We learned how to create equal ratios and how to write them in the simplest form. Tomorrow we will find the unit rate for a given rate.
Today was our AR Reward Day. Unfortunately, only 10 students from Team Enterprise made this nine week's AR Goal. We need to bring an AR book to school each day to keep reading! The AR Reward was held in the gym today where we watched a movie and played volleyball!
Homework:
Math (202): R 6-2 and P 6-2
Wellness: page 89 1-5
