Not In Our House!

We were treated to a special kick-off to our new Olweus Bullying Prevention Program today, which included stunts being performed using BMX bikes! The message going along with this entertainment, brought to us by C.I.S.P.O., was extremely clear...Bullying at C.I.S. ends TODAY! We appreciate our Parents' Organization, along with Mr. Chambers, teachers, and staff who organized the program. We know that everyone will benefit from making our school a No Bully Zone.

In addition to the program, we reviewed spelling, proved what we know about complex and compound sentences, and continued our preparation for tomorrow's cafe. We also shared in our first of weekly class meetings for the Olweus Program, and visited our Library. All in all, it was a busy and fun day.

Reading - Be prepared for discussion of The Westing Game tomorrow. Have your completed role ready for class, based on pages 111-144.
Math - Passing Time at the Track sheet

Discovering New Words

Our Language Arts classes explored new words for Hot Dogs and Bamboo Shoots. We used structural clues and context clues to find meanings, synonyms, and antonyms. Our groups did a great job of building graphic organizers. We acted like detectives studying the words and searching for clues to meanings.

Our last review for the coming chapter 1 test in Social Studies was today.

Our group visited the Book Fair today! Everyone enjoyed shopping, and we appreciate the parents who volunteered their time.

Homework:
Reading - Practice book p. 32 Finish reading (p. 111-144) in The Westing Game and complete your role
Math - Practice R1-15
Writing - Grammar p. 17
Social Studies - Ch. 1 Test this Friday
Science - Flashcards and Saturn worksheet due Friday
Wellness - Finish posters

Never Believe Generalizations!

School is fun and easy! This is a generalization because for some people school is boring and hard. All dogs hate cats. This is a generalization because dogs are being grouped together, and one thing is being said about them. Some generalizations are faulty and some are considered valid. Recognizing generalizations in our reading is the skill for the week. Today we applied the skill to a short story, practicing together. As the week continues, we will look for generalizations in our story 'Hot Dogs and Bamboo Shoots.'

In Social Studies today, we played a huge board game in teams! Mrs. Mac would ask a question and groups silently discussed and wrote an answer on their team's white board, which was immediately flipped to hide the answer. If the answer we flashed to Mrs. Mac was correct, we were able to move our team's game piece on its path to the finish line. Many questions were asked about the geography of Africa. We are sure to do well on Friday's chapter test.

Group 308, Mrs. Mac's group, will attend the Book Fair tomorrow afternoon from 2:00-2:25. Remember to bring your money!

Homework:
Reading - Share 'Family Times' paper. Also, read pages 111-144 in The Westing Game, and complete your role for Friday.
Math - worksheet
Spelling - Trace +2 (r-controlled vowels)
Writing - Grammar page 16
Social Studies - Study. Chapter 1 Test this Friday

Learning About Clauses (ho-ho-ho)!

Today in Language Arts, we learned to distinguish between dependent and independent clauses. We watched a Powerpoint slideshow of information about each and how to keep them straight. We had fun thinking of dependent clauses as babies and independent clauses as adults. Sentences were compared to houses. Please ask your child to share the story they heard in Grammar today. It will help them to review.

Social Studies was a time of review. Each group received a small batch of cards that were used to create an organizer based on the main concepts covered in Chapter 1. They worked to find landforms, climate, vegetation, and resources for each region of Africa through the use of various maps. Tomorrow, we will play Cecil's biggest board game for review for Friday's Chapter 1 Test.

Members of the Cecil Fire Department visited our school this afternoon to talk about fire safety. We enjoyed their presentation and appreciated the time they spent helping us learn how to stay safe.
