Full Moon Friday?

Is it the full moon? The whole sixth grade seemed to be a little noisy today. Everyone seemed to notice, including Mr. Abbondanza. We're hoping it was just the moon!

Today, Team Enterprise got their first taste of role preparation. We applied the roles to The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Students were split into groups and we're able to work together to prepare questions, identify interesting words, find exciting story parts, and analyze various characters. Each student will return to their respective group next week to use the cards for discussion. Spelling Soup was interesting today! The ie, ei pattern was giving more than a few students trouble! Please continue to practice on Spelling City. The test will be on Wednesday.

Due to Chorus, Art, and Phys. Ed., we do not have Social Studies on Friday. Everyone should continue to study their new map vocabulary words for a quiz next week. Get ready for our 'Orange With an Attitude' activity on Monday! It will be the beginning lesson for determining exact location!

We worked hard on our Math Test today. The students were tested on sections 1-1 through 1-7. On Monday, the students will learn about Mrs. Haddox's Aunt Sally and how she loves Math.

Why is the sea-floor spreading? The students learned the answer to this question in science. Next week, we will be discovering the different kinds of rocks that make up the crust of our planet.

Homework:
Language Arts - Finish your McD's role, if it is unfinished. Study spelling and vocabulary.
Social Studies - Study vocabulary words.
Science - Define vocabulary for pages D-6 through D-9.

Food for Thought!

Our team had a great day! We were happy about our successful Open House, and today we were able to attend our school's Book Fair! Thank you to all parents who attended our school last night and to those who have given their time to make the Book Fair a success.

Our study of Geography continued today with a closer look at globes and maps. Today we analyzed the problem of accurately representing a globe on a flat map. We looked at various map projections and discussed distortions. New vocabulary words were given and the students are to review these tonight. In our next class, we will practice finding exact location using latitude and longitude measurement.

In Language Arts, we reviewed our story Teammates and discussed our author's viewpoint based on words and phrases he used in the biography. The students determined that the author admired Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. The author also wanted to express his love for the game and his opinion about segregation and prejudice. Great discussion today! Thoughtful reading by the class.

We were puzzled in Science class! We used the world as our template and cut out the plates and use them as puzzle pieces to see if they could fit together. The students discussed the movement of the plates and suggested where the plates might move to in hundreds of years.

Math class continued to pull apart word problems. We used the Promethean Board to help solve a problem that we had in the Learning Centers. Tonight, we are completing some review problems to help us on a math quiz that we will have either tomorrow or Monday on sections 1-1 through 1-7.

Homework:
Social Studies: Study vocabulary words
Math: Complete problems 1-15 on page 22 and answers letters H and I
Review for Math Quiz on Sections 1-1 through 1-7

What a Team!

Team Enterprise is looking forward to Open House! We hope to see you there!

Getting Ready for a Big Night!

Our team is very excited about Open House! All parents are invited to attend Open House tomorrow evening at from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. The students have many pieces of beautiful work to share, and we are very excited as teachers to meet you! Please come, and make the evening a success!

In Language Arts, we are beginning a new story called Teammates. The story is about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, and we are very excited to begin! Today, we focused on our skill for the week - Author's Viewpoint. We read a short story about baseball to help us search for words the author uses that indicates his/her viewpoint. Tomorrow, we'll practice more.

Our new spelling list is a bit tricky! All the words contain ie and ei spelling patterns. We will be working on these words for the next week. Students can also practice using the Spelling City link on our blog.

In Science, we finished our posters depicting the Earth's layers. The students did a nice job on these posters. Please look for them at Open House.

The students reviewed estimating products and quotients. We learned that when you estimate a product, you need to round to EACH number's greatest place value. When you round a sum or difference, you are to compare and round to BOTH numbers highest place value. The students were given some sample problems to practice tonight.

Homework:

Language Arts - Trace + 2 for spelling practice is due tomorrow. Also, share your "Family Times" paper.
Math - 2-7 worksheet and R1-6, numbers 1-8 only
Science- Finish the Earth's Layers Poster

Being Truthful!

Students have been working diligently on their top secret grown-up files! They are exposing the truth, and illustrating it as well! These creative stories will be on display at Open House for your reading pleasure. Today, we worked on our presentation of these final copies, and they're looking fabulous! You will certainly be entertained!!

Team Enterprise also took a quiz on The Five Themes of Geography today. Usually, students take quizzes on their own, but Mr. Help was here for this quiz. Hopefully, this was all anyone needed to achieve a great score.

At the end of our day, we attended a special kick-off to this year's fundraising effort. Please share the BIG and LITTLE books with your parents tonight. The little book is due back tomorrow! Also, show your parents the letter you received in school.

Homework:

Math - Worksheet p. 6 (room 202 only).
