A Brand New Crew!

Welcome back to a new school year! I was so excited to meet my students on Monday, and so far the week has been busy and moving along quite smoothly. For parents and students new to this blog, I want to welcome you! Please make this blog one of your marked favorites! It will be your window to our classroom. Stories of our days of learning, pictures of work, students at work and play, as well as links to learning sites will be featured. Announcements and homework are other bits of important information I'll share.

This year, I have a student teacher who will be with me through December. Her name is Miss Albitz, and she is from California University. She has great enthusiasm and has been involving herself in all activities from day #1! Parents coming to Open House on September 19th, from 6:00 - 8:00, will have a chance to meet and talk with her. I'm looking forward to meeting you that night, so I hope you'll set aside time to join in the fun.

I was able to speak to many of you on Monday night after school on the telephone. If you weren't home, I left a message and will try again soon. I enjoyed getting to know you, and I thank you for sharing important information about your child that will be helpful. I'm very excited about the new school year! Every year brings new opportunities and growth for all. I hope you're as excited as I am!

Enjoy the pictures of an activity the students participated in in Social Studies today. We are starting with Africa this year, but not without reviewing a few map skills. The kids had fun exploring many maps today.

Homework:
Reading - Bring your completed and revised poem to class tomorrow. Also bring your body for the art part of the project!

IF YOU STILL OWE ANY OF THE DISTRIBUTED FORMS, PLEASE BRING THEM ASAP!

Happy Last Day!

It seems as though I blinked my eyes and the school year was over! I guess that's how it is when you're having fun! This year has been so enjoyable! Cecil Intermediate seems like home now, and I'll truly miss the students I've gotten to know so well. We've all taken a flying leap this year; stretching our imaginations and growing together. Best wishes to my students! You are ready for this next step, and I know I'll hear many good things about you in the years to come. Always remember to give each day your all! If you do, you'll be successful. Happy Summer to all! Don't forget to keep reading!

Our Wax Museum

Welcome to Our Wax Museum! This project was our attempt at sharing our novel From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler with other readers in our school. Each cafe group was assigned a chapter of the book. They chose their favorite scene, wrote a summary, designed a backdrop and props, dressed as characters, and froze in place. Students invited to the museum viewed the scenes chapter by chapter in our darkened gymnasium. What fun!

Pictures of Our Class

For our final novel of the year, Mrs. Mac shared Pictures of Hollis Woods.  It is an award winning story by Patricia Reilly Giff that we truly enjoyed hearing.  Hollis Woods led a difficult life for most of her twelve years, but finally found a family who loved her.  The story is told in pictures (flashbacks) and chapters (present time).  The pictures Hollis drew helped us to understand her true character and desires.  Some parts were humorous, and some parts were heart wrenching.  Our final project, Pictures of Our Class, relating to the story, is presented above in a movie.  Enjoy!

We all had a taste of summer this past holiday weekend!  The weather was simply gorgeous, and it made us think of all the fun that's ahead.  We worked on portfolios this afternoon, choosing pieces of work we want to hold onto for various reasons.  It was fun looking back on all the work we've done, including work from earlier years.  Portfolio Day is Thursday, and all parents are welcome at 2:00 p.m.  Enjoy the slideshow above!  It also enables us to look back on fun we've had together in 6th grade.

Homework:
Reading - Complete practice book p. 163.  Review your story "A Brother's Promise" and vocabulary/spelling words.  Tests tomorrow.

Looking Back!

So many exciting events are coming our way!  Tomorrow we'll hear from our Attorney General as part of the D.A.R.E. program, our Spring Chorus/Band Concert is Thursday, 6th Grade Move-up Day is Friday, and that's just this week!  Next week will be exciting as well!

In the days in-between, you will see Looking Back slideshows, featuring pictures taken from the beginning of the school year!  The year has been quite fun, and although there's so much to look forward to, it's always interesting to look back and remember the things we've done.  Enjoy!

Math - Complete "Mow-Joe"
Science - Vocabulary quiz on Friday
Foreign Language - Twisters Test
