Rested and Ready!

Our class came in rested and ready today! It seemed like everyone was paying close attention in class and working hard! No behavior checks were given, and the group as a whole did so well. Two Surprise Scramble letters were awarded to the group for being so on the ball! In Language Arts, the students reviewed the skill of determining sequence of a passage. We practiced with a short story about a boy learning to improve his swimming skills, and looked for clue words that would help us with time order. Students also received new vocabulary that will be a part of the story we will read tomorrow. Everyone is looking forward to reading Tony and the Snark in class tomorrow. We will participate in a sequencing activity with storyboards after reading.
Finding absolute location was the skill for the day in Social Studies. We worked on using latitude and longitude lines to find locations of various cities. The activity reminded us of a popular game called Battleship! In Math, we reviewed standard form, word form, short word form, and expanded form for place value. We discussed the difference between place and value of a number. To help all of this information to gel, we learned a song to the tune of The Adams Family! Please ask your child to share this with you tonight! Ms. Scheidler assigned each student a famous scientist to research. We will be learning about their many accomplishments through information she has provided and information available to us on the internet. Homework: Reading: Study new vocabulary. Math: Riddle sheet (both sides) Social Studies: 1-11 (top of sheet only) Spelling: spelling practice p. 2 Science: Scientist Research (optional)

A Brand New Year!

Welcome to Our Flying Leap and to an exciting new school year! This new blog name was chosen as a reminder that we need to take flying leaps, or risks, to grow as learners. Ms. Scheidler and I have each taken a flying leap to new schools this year! She and I are excited about the new challenges ahead that will help us continue to grow as teachers. We will strive to provide our classes with interesting learning activities that will encourage team work and growth all year long. Please make Our Flying Leap a favorite! Take the journey with our team!

Until We Meet Again....

This is our final USS Enterprise blog for the 2010-2011 school year! We are amazed at how quickly the year has passed. It was difficult to say good-bye to everyone at school today, but we had fun reflecting on our memories through our beautiful new yearbooks. Everyone had a chance to write messages, give hugs, and say farewell for the year. We wish you a safe and restful summer, as well as a successful 7th grade year at C-M Middle School. We know that you are well prepared for this new adventure, but always know that you'll be part of Team USS Enterprise for all times!

Love,
Mrs. Haddox and Mrs. McIlvaine

Today was Field Day! Everyone had a wonderful time! We want to thank Mr. Pietras and all the great parent volunteers who ran the events and helped in the cafeteria. We're thankful that you care about us so much.

Tomorrow is our last half day together! Students, please bring your lunch tags to turn in to your teacher. Our new yearbooks are in, and we'll all get to meet and sign autographs. Bring a pen to use!

Enjoy the sunshine!

Awards Day!

Today was a special day for Sixth Grade! Many students won special awards for excellence in various subjects. We also heard writings from selected students, sharing their fond memories about N.S.I.S. Some students received the prestigious Academic Excellence and Academic Achievement Awards, as well as Perfect Attendance. Others received Citizenship, Greatest Strides, Team Player, and Leadership Awards. Related Arts teachers also shared top awards for their areas of study. It was a great day for honoring those who work so hard.

We wish our Sixth Graders all the best at the Middle School and in the years that follow. You are ready for the next chapter in your lives, and we know you'll succeed.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT MONDAY IS FIELD DAY! WEAR SUNSCREEN, HATS, AND WHATEVER ELSE YOU NEED TO BE SAFE AND COMFORTABLE.

Saying Goodbye to a Special Person

Mr. Bruce, our custodian on the upper floor at N.S.I., is retiring this year. Today, our 6th grade classes and teachers honored him for the years he has spent keeping our floor in top shape. We thanked him for his work with cards, a gift, and cake at the end of the day. The 6th graders also enjoyed popsicles in the sunshine during this special farewell. We all wish Mr. Bruce the best in life! He deserves this hard earned break, but we will miss him.

Team Enterprise also enjoyed their Chinese Auction today! We have earned tickets over the past weeks for being good citizens in the classroom and demonstrating good learning and study habits. Today, we placed our tickets in bags next to items we were interested in winning and the auction began. It was great fun!

Our Awards Assembly will take place tomorrow!

Middle School Tour!

Today all of 6th grade got the grand tour of the Middle School. Lead by Student Council Members, we saw how the Middle School was divided into teams. We also got to see classrooms, the office, gym, and cafeteria.
Dr. Taranto was there to greet us and start our tour. Mr. Schrag and Mr. Gillespie showed us a video highlighting all the great activities we can participate in at the Middle School. In August, we will be receiving our schedules and take a more formal tour, seeing our specific classrooms and meeting our team teachers. As Dr. Taranto said, "We are already seventh graders!"
